Enrichment, Trips and Events

We want our students to enjoy a rich and varied school life and that includes a choice of extra-curricular and enrichment activities. At lunch times and after school, there a variety of clubs and societies, including sports, opportunities to learn additional skills and homework club, that runs in B3 before school, at lunch time and after school Monday – Thursday. Students are encouraged to take part in further enrichment opportunities such as Music lessons and the School Council.

Enrichment

School Clubs

A wide variety of school clubs are on offer at Harlington with details being published in the Harlington HEADlights newsletter. Clubs include football, basketball, netball, table tennis, badminton, fitness, drama, French, dungeons and dragons, game club, art and photography.

Music Lessons

Lessons available for keyboard, vocals, guitar, bass guitar, drumkit.

Student Voice and Council

Student Voice is represented through the School Council with groups of students involved in Student Voice activities throughout the year.

The School Council consists of a cross-section of students (2 from each form group) plus the Head Student(s) and Student Leadership Team. Year 7 – 13 elections are held in September during form groups. Head Students are selected from an application and interview process during the early part of the summer term for the following year.

The School Council divides itself into sub-committees according to current priorities. The Head Student(s) and the Student Management Team chair the School Council and meet regularly with the Headteacher to feed-back student compliments, concerns and ideas for improvement.

Trips & Visits

Students benefit hugely from visiting places of interest and staff organise trips to a wide variety of places and experiences. These experiences broaden students’ horizons and deepen their learning. More than 80 trips and visits take place annually, as part of our ‘Magic & Sparkle’ enhanced curriculum as well as a number of in-school workshops and events. Upcoming trips and events are publicised in the Harlington HEADlights.

Parents are sent detailed information and asked to sign a permission form for each trip with the exception of short, local trips within walking distance of the school which may occur during a lesson, and sporting fixtures. Permission forms must be returned for off-site trips at least a week in advance, in order that a staff trip planning meeting can take place in good time.

At times, it is necessary to ask parents for a voluntary contribution towards the cost of school trips. Regrettably, if we do not receive enough voluntary donations, a trip or event may not go ahead.

No student should miss out due to financial need. Students who are in receipt of Free School Meals are automatically entitled to a 50% discount for all trips and events, and we have a hardship fund for students who are not eligible for Free School Meals. We always consider requests to provide financial assistance if money is tight. Please contact the school in confidence if you’d like to request help with the cost of a trip.
